Murderers, rapists, pedophiles and thieves could be released from prison within months as Labor is accused of “betraying” victims. The Ministry of Justice’s highly controversial sentencing reforms received Royal Assent on Thursday despite widespread concerns from campaigners and families.

Approximately 43,000 criminals will avoid prison altogether, while many convicts will be released after spending only a third of their sentence in prison. Those sentenced to four years or more will be released only after serving 50 percent of their sentence behind bars.

The so-called “progress model” will come into force this fall. The Ministry of Justice insisted the changes were necessary to prevent prisons from being overrun.

Justice sources told the Daily Express that thousands of criminals already behind bars would effectively benefit from shorter sentences because the reforms were applied “retroactively”. This means some rapists who have to serve two-thirds of their sentences in prison could be automatically eligible for release later this year.

Offenders will be released in slices as justice chiefs want to ensure police and probation officers are prepared to deal with an influx of potentially dangerous criminals into communities across the UK.

The Justice Department said it would take two years to deal with the entire group currently behind bars.

From the autumn, criminals jailed will automatically be subject to a “promotion model” that aims to reward good behavior behind bars.

Nick Timothy MP, Shadow Justice Secretary, said: “Labour continues to press ahead with policies that will allow thousands of serious violent and sexual offenders, including rapists and pedophiles, to leave prison and onto our streets.

“This means more criminals going free, more victims going unjustly and more pressure on an already overburdened police force.

“Keir Starmer has been warned but he does not have the backbone to lead and make the tough decisions Britain needs.”

Reform’s Robert Jenrick said: “These sentencing changes will make British people less safe. Our streets already feel lawless and allowing criminals to walk out of prison having served as little as a third of their sentence is sure to cause chaos.”

Shadow Justice Secretary Kieran Mullan said: “This bill is a betrayal of the victims it claims to help.

“The victims never agreed to a compromise – their day in court was in exchange for watching thousands of rapists, pedophiles and serious violent criminals leave prison early.

“Tens of thousands of criminals will now have to serve only a third of their sentences.

“This is an affront to justice and Labor and Liberal Democrat MPs who voted for this should be ashamed of themselves. There are difficulties in the justice system; you don’t meet them like this.”

The Conservatives have warned that prison sentences could be shortened for more than 6,500 dangerous offenders, including those jailed for rape, stalking, child grooming and child sex offences.

More than 62 per cent of rapists in prison will also benefit from Labour’s changes, as 624 of the 994 offenders jailed for rape each year will be eligible for shorter sentences.

The murderers will also be let out early, but the murderers will be excluded from this highly controversial plan.

It comes after the Sunday Express revealed child sex abusers jailed for “some of the worst possible crimes” could be released after spending just a third of their prison sentence behind bars.

This is because only the most “serious” offenders will have to serve half their sentences in prison, a cut from the current 67%. This list includes those convicted of rape and assault by penetration.

However, perverts caught filming, distributing or publishing child sexual abuse images and demons imprisoned for having sexual intercourse with a child will only spend one-third of their sentences behind bars.

In total, 85 percent of offenders sentenced to the most serious prison terms are included in the reductions; More than 6,500 of the most severely sentenced criminals, including rapists, pedophiles, perverts, violent attackers and even attempted murderers, will be eligible for early release.

Most prisoners will be tagged and monitored electronically as ministers try to prevent a repeat of the overcrowding crisis.

At one point last autumn, justice chiefs feared a complete breakdown of law and order as police would be unable to arrest criminals because they had nowhere to take them.

Only the most extreme criminals will be denied the right to leave prison halfway

For the first time, criminals will be tagged before leaving prison to prevent them from causing harm to communities.

Commenting on the Royal Assent, Corrections Minister Jake Richards said: “This government has inherited a prison system that is at breaking point and is at risk of a complete breakdown of law and order in this country.

“Urgent, bold action was needed to keep the public safe. These reforms will ensure we never again run out of space in prisons and keep dangerous criminals off our streets, while also prioritizing victims with much tougher sentences for offenders outside prison.

“We are already undertaking the largest prison expansion since Victorian times, but the reality is that we cannot simply build our way out of chaos – this needs to go hand in hand with radical reform to prevent another ticking time bomb.”
