Maharashtra govt to roll out farm loan waiver before June 30: Devendra Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday announced that the state government will implement farm loan waiver before June 30 as preparations are in the final phase.

Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis said that the state cabinet is already holding detailed discussions and the plan will be implemented after receiving data from the few remaining districts.

When asked about Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange’s decision to launch a fresh agitation on the reservation issue, the chief minister maintained that the state government has been continuously taking steps for the society.

“Various institutions have been established and Maratha youth are performing well in competitive examinations for civil services. Educational scholarships, hostels and maintenance allowances are continuing. No programs have been stopped,” he said.

Jarange announced an indefinite hunger strike from May 30 over the “unmet” demands of the community and gave the Maharashtra government until May 29 to distribute Kunbi caste certificates in Marathwada and accused Fadnavis of stalling the process.

The Prime Minister clarified that there is no large-scale pending backlog of Kunbi certificates.
“Certificates are given to those who meet the rules and criteria. The process is being carried out as per the directions of the Supreme Court. Sub-committees and eligibility criteria have also been formed accordingly. The state government cannot interfere in this process.” he added. Fadnavis said that preparations for farm loan waiver are in the final stage.

“Discussions were held in the state cabinet. We have received data from some districts and once this data is received, we will implement the loan waiver before June 30,” he said.

Participating in the second International Agricultural Hackathon, the prime minister said, “Four products were selected at the event and these will be developed into commercial ventures.” he said.

From next year, the program will be called ‘Maharashtra Agri Hackathon’ and the best project award will be named after the late Ajit Pawar.

In one of the civic programmes, the prime minister appealed to party workers to refrain from following his convoy with their personal vehicles.

“Don’t take your cars and don’t follow us (ministers). We have to respond to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s (austerity) call to reduce fuel consumption,” he appealed.
