Maharashtra rains: Landslide on Mumbai-Goa Highway halts traffic for 12 hours

A landslide on the Mumbai-Goa highway near Chiplun halted vehicular movement on both sides for over 12 hours as the administration’s clearance efforts progressed slowly due to rain.

Vehicle movement on the Mumbai-Goa highway was affected by the landslide in Khavati area near Chiplun. The road was closed due to debris and vehicles did not move for 10-12 hours. Travelers reported that there was no food, water or fuel in their location. Administrative teams started removing debris in the morning, but rainfall slowed down the pace of the work. Authorities have issued a warning to motorists traveling from Mumbai to Goa and asked them to be careful.

A landslide also occurred on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near the Parashuram Ghat area. Soil and rocks began to slide from the hill near Omega Hotel. Vehicle movement was stopped on this route.

In Raigad district, the Khopoli-Pen highway between Sarsan and Isamba Phata was closed to traffic due to waterlogging. The ‘Missing Link’ project on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was damaged due to the collapse of a slab. Video of water and mud entering the damaged section is shared on social media.

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Raigad district. Savitri River in Mahad reached alert level and water entered along the river banks. Market areas in the town and surrounding settlements were affected. Management is monitoring the situation.
