Telangana Budget 2026-27 | State to undertake Census from May 11

The Telangana government has announced that it will conduct the first Census in the state after the formation of Telangana from May 11, 2026 to June 9, 2026.

Deputy Prime Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who is also the Finance Minister, announced the schedule in his 2026-27 budget speech in the Parliament on Friday, March 20, 2026. He said that intensive preparations are ongoing to conduct the Census digitally, which is the basis of democratic processes such as delimitation of Parliament and Assembly constituencies, formation of panchayats and urban local bodies, implementation of reservations.

The Finance Minister said that the Census process includes Self-Enumeration method and caste enumeration component. The first phase of the Census will be held between 11 May 2026 and 9 June 2026. The Self-Counting process will be carried out between 26 April 2026 and 10 May 2026. The second phase will be held across the country between 9 February 2027 and 28 February 2027. Then, March 1, 2027 will be taken as the reference date.
