Trump tells Davos Europe is heading in wrong direction

US President Donald Trump said in his economic speech in Davos, Switzerland, which was overshadowed by fraying transatlantic ties and the effort to buy Greenland, that Europe was going in the wrong direction.

“I love Europe and I want to see Europe get better, but it’s not going in the right direction,” Trump said at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting on Wednesday.

“Trump will use this speech to discuss economic policies centered around America First, but he may also address Greenland and Venezuela,” a senior White House official told reporters en route to the Swiss mountain resort.

The official said he would talk more about foreign policy on Thursday.

Marking the end of his tumultuous first year in office on Tuesday, Trump is poised to eclipse the agenda of the WEF, where global elites buck economic and political trends.

Trump said at a press conference on Tuesday that he would hold talks in Davos about Denmark’s Greenland region and that he was optimistic that an agreement could eventually be reached.

“I think we will find a solution where NATO will be very happy and where we will be very happy. But we need it for security. We need it for national security,” he said.

NATO leaders have warned that Trump’s Greenland strategy could upend the alliance, while leaders of Denmark and Greenland have proposed various paths for a greater US presence on the strategic island territory of 57,000 people.

Trump, who attributed Greenland to his anger at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, said, “You’ll find out,” when asked how far he wanted to go.
