The Strait of Hormuz is actually open to ships but there is a high risk of being bombed by Iranian forces, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters on Friday.

Hegseth said, “Currently, the only thing that prohibits passage in the Bosphorus is Iran firing on ships. If Iran does not do this, passage is open.”

Iranian military leaders have said they will continue to block ship passage through the strait and increase oil prices, which are already above $200 per barrel. This is the largest disruption in global oil supply in history.

On Friday, Trump announced that the United States had struck more than 90 military targets on Kharg Island, a deep-sea fuel terminal through which most of Iran’s oil flows, usually to its main buyer, China.
