Mystery as white foam appears on UK river where dead fish found | UK | News

While experts were trying to find out why, dead fish were found in the same part of the river where the mysterious white foam appeared. The Environment Agency confirmed officers were investigating “small dead fish and juvenile fish” (juvenile fish, meaning juvenile or young fish) in the River Thet area in Norfolk, where the “contaminant was an unknown substance”.

Expert teams were sent to collect samples on Saturday to find the source of the pollution and prevent it from spreading further. Fire crews also attended and told people not to enter the river or allow their pets to swim in it. The Environment Agency said more foam could be collected but “will have little environmental impact as it disperses”.

Anglican Water said a “third party” was involved in the investigation and that the foam and fish deaths were not caused by “equipment or assets in the area”.

The Environment Agency said it would wait for the pollutant to go away before investigating long-term effects.

He also attended the foam event on the River Thet in December 2024, but was unable to identify the source in this event.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “Environment Agency officers are continuing to investigate the cause of the large amount of foam found in the River Thet in central Thetford yesterday.

“Our expert teams collected samples, identified the possible source and prevented another leak. The investigation will continue to prevent this from happening again.

“It is possible that we may see a second foam cloud today and the foam will continue to move down the river. It will still be visible but will have little environmental impact as it dissipates.”
