Kate and William’s Christmas card doesn’t look very jolly. But now a fashion expert reveals hidden details in their ‘earthy’ outfits that speak volumes about their ‘authenticity’

It may not scream Christmas, but the Prince and Princess of Wales’ festive card is full of hidden meaning, according to fashion experts.

In the photo taken by Josh Shinner, Kate and William, both 43, were beaming with their children Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, in a grassy area of Norfolk in April.

William, Charlotte and Louis complemented each other in green knitwear, while George’s brown waistcoat and Kate’s country casual outfits screamed countryside rather than Christmas cheer.

But Daily Mail celebrity stylist Oriona Robb revealed there’s much more to their ensemble than meets the eye, saying: ‘This look is a masterclass in quiet harmony.

‘Kate and William opted for a clean, understated palette that echoes the children’s braids and layers, creating a sense of visual harmony without veering into anything contrived.

‘Greens, soft browns and natural textures provide a solid and reassuring feel; a deliberate move away from highly polished formality in favor of warmth, approachability and authenticity.’

Robb added that a particularly fascinating element of the image was how the family managed to communicate ‘unity without monotony.’

He continued: ‘Each family member retains their individuality, but the common tonal language subtly binds them together.

‘This is modern royal wear at its most effective: comfortable and deeply emotionally intelligent. It evokes stability and unity without saying a word; It is a fashion used as silent messaging.

‘From my perspective, this kind of coordinated dressing works because it feels lived-in and believable.

‘This visually and symbolically reinforces the idea of a family moving as one, which is particularly powerful in the context of Christmas. There’s nothing trend-driven here; timeless and deeply intentional.’

Stylist Lisa Talbot added that the family’s harmonious color palette creates “visual harmony and a feeling of calm.”

Talbot said: ‘This subtly strengthens togetherness, stability and trust; It doesn’t all feel staged or overly formal.

‘This shows confidence in who they are as a family at this time and sends a clear message of solidarity.

‘From a style perspective, it’s less about fashion statements and more about using clothes to quietly communicate storytelling, connection, unity and strength.’

Eliza Scarborough, Fashion Editor of the Daily Mail, agrees, writing: ‘Clothes are becoming a subtle but strategic tool in perfectly harmonious hues that quietly reinforce stability, tradition and togetherness.

‘This is also a sign of continuity. By coordinating with their children, William and Kate place the family firmly at the center of the monarchy’s future.

‘In a year of so much challenge, this Christmas card reveals a family that is not only comfortable in front of the camera, but also united in harmony behind the scenes.’

The photo was posted on Kensington Palace’s social media with the caption: ‘Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.’

In the photo, William and Kate were seen smiling with their children as they sat on the grass among the spring daffodils, while the princess had her arm around George.

Charlotte leans her head on her father’s shoulder and holds his arm, while a relaxed Louis (without his upper front teeth) leans between William’s legs.

The photo appeared to be the same photo shoot in which Mr. Shinner took portraits for George’s 12th birthday in July and Louis’ seventh birthday in April.

Another photo of William with his three children was published on Father’s Day in June and turned out to be the same photo prepared by the photographer.

The new photo was released two days after William and Kate joined other royals at the King’s annual pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have chosen their 20th wedding anniversary portraits for their official Christmas card, which was unveiled to the public on December 6 this year.

The day before, Welshmen and their children joined a host of celebrities, sports stars and community dignitaries for Kate’s ‘Together in Christmas’ ceremony.

Kate presided over the carol service at Westminster Abbey on December 5, and 1,600 guests filled the pews where the princess and her husband married in 2011.

William, Kate and the children are expected to join the King and Queen, along with other members of the Royal Family, at Sandringham in Norfolk for Christmas Day.

Charles is also thought to have invited Camilla’s children and their families, as well as his nieces Princess Beatrice and Eugenie, but not their disgraced father Andrew.

Welshmen can join Charles for the Christmas Day service, which includes a traditional stroll after church where they meet well-wishers.

The family of five experienced a big change just a few weeks ago when they moved into their eight-bedroom ‘forever home’, Forest Lodge, a Grade II-listed Georgian manor house in Windsor Great Park.

The change is seen as a new beginning for them after Kate’s cancer recovery announced at the beginning of 2025, which William described as a ‘brutal’ 2024.

Andrew, meanwhile, has been forced to give up his Windsor home, Royal Lodge, after an outcry when it was revealed he was paying peppermint rent for the property and will move to a home on the King’s private Sandringham estate.

Virginia Giuffre was stripped of her titles following the publication of her memoir detailing allegations that she was forced to have sex with the former prince on three occasions, including when she was 17. Andrew vehemently denies the allegations.
