Ashes fourth Test: Australia and England player ratings

Ben Duckett – 6 – Of course, it was a pleasure to return to the field after a difficult period. Another over-the-top dismissal in the first innings, however, enabled England to take the lead in the second innings.

Zak Crawley – 6 – Another under-pressure English opener who made sure they did well in the second innings. A point is probably needed in Sydney under more conventional circumstances.

Jacob Bethell – 6 – He justified his selection with a guaranteed second innings tally of 40, which would certainly be beyond Ollie Pope. It will be interesting to see if he gets a chance on flat ground.

Joe Root – 3 – He made a duck in the first innings, but fought back for 15 in the second innings to ensure Australia did not roll over. Ever since that epic hundred in Brisbane he has looked out of rhythm.

Harry Brook – 7 – His bravado of 41 in the first innings was the highlight of the match. It may be maddening, but it has a touch of genius.

Ben Stokes – 7 – He made important runs in the first innings and stepped up the ball when Gus Atkinson was injured. He deserves this for everything he has given to England.

Jamie Smith – 4 – A game improved with gloves, it would have been even better if it wasn’t so deep. Has anyone in the England backroom mentioned this?

Will Jacks – 2 – He didn’t bowl, only batted once and dropped the catch, but we can say he was part of England’s rare win in Australia.

Gus Atkinson – 6 – His best showing of the series, which could now end brutally due to a hamstring problem. Later in the first day I am much better with the ball and important runs.

Brydon Carse – 7 – He started slowly with the ball, then built up to his best performance of the series on the second morning. He gets extra points for his courage in batting at number three.

Josh Language – 7 – Great to take five wickets on the first day, including his rabbit, Steve Smith. He is staking a claim to be in England’s first-choice attack whenever he is fit. The player of the match has been announced.
