Tiger attacks: Karnataka Minister orders closure of safari in Bandipur, Nagarahole

At a time when increasing tiger attacks in Mysuru region have led to tragic deaths of farmers, Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar B. Khandre has ordered immediate closure of safari operations in Nagarahole and Bandipur, as well as suspension of trekking activities in human-wildlife conflict zones. The minister directed that all available forest personnel be deployed for the operation to capture the tiger, which is responsible for constant attacks on humans.
Mr. Khandre, in his written instructions to the Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Chief Wildlife Warden, expressed deep sorrow over the death of Chowdaiah Naika (35), who was killed in a tiger attack near Hale Heggodilu village in Moleyur district of Saragur taluk in Mysuru district on the morning of November 7.
He ordered that both safari operations remain closed until further notice and that the services of officers and safari personnel be diverted to support the tiger capture operation.
The Minister stated that three people lost their lives in tiger attacks on the edges of Nagarahole-Bandipur forests in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts in the last month, and this is extremely saddening.
In Bandipur on October 27 and in Chamarajanagar district on November 2, K. Venkatesh, Minister in-charge of Mysuru district and Dr. Recalling meetings attended by HC Mahadevappa and local legislators, Mr. Khandre said clear instructions have been issued to intensify efforts to capture the tiger and be ready to shut down safari operations if necessary. “However, it is shocking that such a tragic event occurs again,” he said.
In view of the deaths due to tiger attack reported on 7 November, the Minister ordered the suspension of marches in conflict-prone areas and the reassignment of all officers, safari staff and vehicle drivers to the tiger capture operation. He also instructed Additional PCCF (Wildlife) and Project Tiger managers to camp at the site and personally supervise efforts to capture the tiger.
