Cold front moves across UK as forecasters warn of hail and thunder
Cold weather is hitting the UK this week as forecasters warn of hail and thunder amid heavy showers.
As the country wakes up to an uneasy and stormy morning, temperatures in the interior and northern regions on Wednesday are a few degrees below the mid-May average.
It comes as northern winds drag in cold air from northern Scandinavia and the Arctic Circle.
Average temperatures of the year vary between 12 and 17C across the country. But forecasters say the mercury will be warmest on Wednesday, around 14 degrees in the south west and around 9 degrees in parts of Scotland.
The day started with heavy rains in the north and southeast. The Met Office warned that wet conditions could be accompanied by thunderstorms in the east in the afternoon, with a risk of heavy rain and hail.
However, sunny weather is expected in some regions, especially the west of England.
Wet and windy weather is expected to continue until Thursday, with heavy showers expected in the east and west of England and Scotland. The Met Office said low pressure will prevail, showers are expected to turn into thunderstorms in these areas and temperatures will remain cool.
