Kerala Couple Registers Marriage Instantly via Video KYC

In a first-of-its-kind digital leap, a couple from Kerala (Lavanya and Vishnu) instantly registered their marriage through Video KYC verification at Kawassery Panchayat in Thrissur district. The couple achieved a new milestone in the state’s e-governance journey by receiving a digitally verified marriage certificate along with their photographs on the same day.
The video showing the couple smiling and completing the online registration process went viral on social media platforms and received great appreciation. Netizens praised Kerala’s innovation and called it a model that other states could emulate. A user from Andhra Pradesh posted on X, urging the state government to implement a similar system for faster and more transparent marriage registration.
The initiative was made possible through K-SMART, an in-house digital management platform developed by Information Kerala Mission (IKM). The system allows couples to verify their identities through Aadhaar-based OTP or email authentication, eliminating the need for physical presence at local institutions. Once verified, couples can digitally download their marriage certificate within a few hours under the supervision of panchayat officials.
According to official data, 1,44,416 marriages were registered in Kerala between January 2024 and September 2025; of these, 62,524 were completed entirely online via video KYC verification. According to a PTI report, Thrissur leads the rankings with the highest number of digital registrations, followed by Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram.
The initiative is especially beneficial for non-resident Keralites (NRKs) and working professionals who often face logistical challenges when visiting local offices. The state government plans to further expand the K-SMART platform to other citizen services and strengthen Kerala’s leading position in digital governance.
