Democrats largely avoid transgender issues in Axios questions ahead of 2028

Only one in nearly 20 Democrats who could run for president can say with certainty that a man cannot be a woman, according to a new report.
Axios polled top Democrats considered 2028 hopefuls on trans issues and found that “most of them don’t want to talk,” including former Vice President Kamala Harris, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The questions include whether transgender girls born male should participate in girls’ sports, whether transgender youth under 18 should be allowed to undergo puberty blockers and hormone therapy, and “Can a man become a woman?” were the questions.

Only former Chicago Mayor Rahn Emanuel responded definitively, saying his answers were unchanged from the previous one. interview last year when he says a man can’t be a woman and biological boys shouldn’t play girls’ sports.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also answered questions.
Shapiro doubled down on his earlier comments that local sports officials should be responsible for determining transgender athletes’ participation in sports, but his personal view was that transgender youth do not deserve “an unfair advantage on the playing field.”
A spokesperson for Buttigieg referred Axios to: NPR interview Last year, he called for compassion for transgender people, acknowledging there were “serious issues of fairness” in the transgender athlete sports debate.

Newsom spoke about the issue with conservative commentator Ben Shapiro on his podcast last week, and Shapiro accused him of dodging the question of “whether boys can be girls.”
Newsom stumbled as he answered, saying: “Yeah, I don’t know – I guess, for the grace of God. Yeah.”
When Shapiro asked why it was difficult to answer, Newsom said they were talking about “very few people.”
“We’re talking about a very small number of people who struggle with gender identity issues. A lot of remarkable people, a lot of extremely successful people, and they’ve led incredible lives in their lives. I don’t know. There’s a lot of hate and bigotry, a lot of condemnation.”
Shapiro said declaring that boys can’t be girls isn’t bigotry.

Newsom, a widely front-runner if he makes an expected 2028 bid, said in a debate with Charlie Kirk last year that it was “deeply unfair” for transgender women to compete in girls’ sports.
