Forest fire rages unchecked in Konnakkad-Kommadi area of Kerala’s Kasaragod; efforts on to protect habitations

While the forest fire that broke out in Konnakkad-Kommadi forest area under Balal panchayat in Kasaragod city of Kerala around 10 pm on Wednesday remained uncontrolled, authorities are continuing their efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residential areas.

Forest officials, Fire and Rescue Services personnel and local residents are working jointly to control the fire. Two fire brigade units from Kanhanagad and Kuttikol reached the spot. However, firefighting was hampered by rugged terrain that prevented fire crews from directly accessing the affected core area.

technical difficulties

Officials said technical difficulties in transporting water to higher elevations further complicated efforts to extinguish the flames. Local residents joined hands with forest officials to create fire lines and limit the spread of fire.

The exact cause of the fire and the extent of damage have not yet been determined, officials said.
