Australian Oscar hopefuls Joel Edgerton, Rose Byrne and Jacob Elordi recognised
Australia’s film and TV academy has given some early awards season recognition to Joel Edgerton, Rose Byrne and Jacob Elordi, the country’s brightest hopes for an acting nomination at next year’s Oscars.
Edgerton plays a traveling logger and railroad worker. Train DreamsByrne is a struggling psychotherapist. If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and Elordi, who portrays the creature FrankensteinHe is among seven Australians nominated for the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts International Awards.
Joining them is Russell Crowe (Nuremberg), Hugh Jackman (Song Sung Blue), Dacre Montgomery (Dead Man’s Wire) and Sarah Snook ( in the TV categoriesIt’s All His Fault).
AACTA has been organizing international awards since 2012 to reflect Australia’s contribution to Hollywood. It used to hold a ceremony in Los Angeles but will now announce its winners during the main AACTA Awards on the Gold Coast in February.
Edgerton, Crowe and Jackman were nominated for best actor over Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme) and Leonardo DiCaprio (One war after another).
Although Edgerton has an excellent shot at his first Oscar nomination, and Chalamet and DiCaprio seem certain to be nominated again, the AACTA field is overlooking strong contenders like Michael B. Jordan (sinners), Wagner Moura (Secret agent), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein), Lee Byung-hun (No Other Choice) and Dwayne Johnson (Shredding Machine).
Byrne, who is also hotly tipped for her first Oscar nomination, is up for best actress against Jessie Buckley (hamnet), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Chase Infiniti (One battle after another) and Renate Reinsve (Emotional Value).
Elordi, another Australian with a good shot at an Oscar nomination, is competing against Montgomery, Benicio del Toro, for best supporting actor (one war after another), Paul Mescal (Hamnet) and Sean Penn (One war after another).
The only non-Australian film acting category is best supporting actress; nominees Glenn Close (Wake the Dead Man: A Mystery with the Knife Out), Elle Fanning (Emotional Value), Mia Goth (Frankenstein), Amy Madigan (Weaponry) and Emily Watson (Hamnet).
Snook was nominated for best actress in a TV series against Erin Doherty (Puberty), Keri Russell (Diplomat), Jean Smart (hacks) and Michelle Williams (Dying for Sex).
There will be 10 best film nominees at the Oscars, but there are five left at the AACTA international awards: hamnet, Marty Supreme, One war after another, sinners And Nuremberg.
While the first four are considered definitive, Nuremberg An outsider who will cut the Oscars against his peers Emotional Value, It Was Just an Accident, Frankenstein, Train Dreams, Bugonia And Secret agent.
The AACTA Awards will be held on February 6, with five days of speeches, workshops and screenings as part of the AACTA Festival.
