Brazilian court convicts Jair Bolsonaro’s son of seeking US help for his father | Jair Bolsonaro

A panel of Brazil’s supreme court voted to convict Eduardo Bolsonaro of interfering with the United States in the coup plotting case of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Each of the four judges on the panel supported the conviction Tuesday and were expected to discuss the sentence later in the day.

Brazil’s attorney general’s office had accused Eduardo Bolsonaro of appealing to US officials to help his father’s case by imposing sanctions on the court’s judges and imposing tariffs on Brazilian goods.

The younger Bolsonaro, a former lawmaker, moved to the United States in 2025, months before the trial that found the right-wing former president guilty of plotting a coup.

He provides active support to his father in the USA, especially from the Trump administration.

Eduardo Bolsonaro said in a statement after Tuesday’s sentencing that he was not properly informed about the court’s legal process.

He told Reuters that the aim of his work in the US was not to have his father acquitted by Brazilian courts, but to force Brazil’s supreme court to punish officials who did not comply with Brazil’s constitution, according to his son’s testimony.
