India-US Defense Agreement: The Governments of India and the US have taken a significant step in defense cooperation as the Indian Ministry of Defense signed a major support package for its fleet of 24 MH-60R “Seahawk” maritime helicopters built by Lockheed Martin. The aim of the contract, worth approximately 7.995 billion rupees (about $946 million), is to ensure the long-term operational readiness of helicopters, deepen interoperability between the two navies and strengthen maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.
What Does the Agreement Cover?
Under the agreement, formalized through Letters of Offer and Acceptance under the US Foreign Military Sales framework, India will receive comprehensive sustainment support for its MH-60R fleet over the next five years. This includes supply of spare parts, maintenance equipment, technical support, training of Indian personnel and establishment of intermediate repair and maintenance facilities in India.

MH-60R — Essential Asset for the Navy
The MH-60R Seahawk is a state-of-the-art, all-weather, multi-role maritime helicopter designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface missions (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), surveillance and ship-borne operations. India has purchased 24 of these machines under the 2020 Foreign Military Sales agreement; As of now, some of them (around 15) are in service.
Given its advanced sensors, weapon systems compatibility and versatility, the MH-60R fleet is at the center of the Indian Navy’s plan to modernize its maritime capabilities and expand its reach across India’s vast coastline and island regions.
Maintenance Package
With this sustainment support, the Indian Navy expects to significantly improve aircraft availability, maintenance turnaround and long-term readiness.
