Emergency services launch search operation after boy, 15, goes missing while swimming in lake near Southampton

Emergency services have launched a search operation for a 15-year-old boy who was last seen swimming in a lake near Southampton.

The teenager was reported missing after he was last seen swimming at Testwood Lakes near Totton, Southampton.

The alarm was sounded at 13.35 on Wednesday.

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed a multi-agency effort is underway to locate him.

A spokesman said: “A multi-agency operation is ongoing following reports that a 15-year-old boy, last seen swimming at Testwood Lakes near Totton, is missing.

“This was reported to police at 1.35pm on Wednesday 24 June and the area is currently off-limits whilst our search operation continues. Please avoid the area at this time.”

Police marine units are assisting in the search alongside colleagues from the National Police Air Service (NPAS), South Central Ambulance Service and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire Service.

Wednesday was the warmest June in history.

Temporary temperatures of 36C were recorded in Wisley, Surrey and Gosport in Hampshire, the Met Office said.

This follows records of 35.8C and 35.7C in Wiggonholt, West Sussex and Charlwood, Surrey, respectively.

This new peak surpassed the previous peak of 35.6C, which was held jointly in 1976 and 1957.

The Met Office has warned that these figures are expected to rise further and further records could fall in the coming days.

The rare red alert for Wednesday and Thursday has been extended to the south coast of England, including Brighton, Bognor Regis, Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth and Dorchester, the Met Office said.

Red heat health warnings have also been issued by the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) for the East of England, East Midlands, London, South East, South West and West Midlands, and yellow heat health warnings for the North East, North West, Yorkshire and the Humber.

The Met Office also issued a yellow heat warning covering much of England on Friday, while a thunderstorm warning has been issued for the South West on Thursday evening.

The Met Office issued an amber warning for extreme heat for the east and south-east of England on Saturday, with extreme heat set to continue into the weekend in some parts of the country.

The forecaster added that it may be necessary to issue further updates on extreme weather conditions as more details about the conditions become clear.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “We issued a further yellow warning for eastern and central England on Friday.

“As forecasts continue to evolve, we may need to issue further updates as more details become clear.”
