Queen rushed to hospital after heart attack as palace issues statement | Royal | News

The former ruler of Denmark will remain in hospital over the weekend for observations and further tests. In the announcement, it was stated that Margrethe was in good spirits, although tired.

The statement stated that further updates will be made if there is any news.

It read: “Her Majesty Queen Margrethe was admitted to Rigshospitalet this afternoon suffering from a heart attack.

“Queen Margrethe will be admitted for observation and further tests over the weekend.

“His Majesty is tired but in good spirits.

“The Royal Household will make an announcement when there is news.”

Denmark’s longest-reigning monarch handed over the throne to his eldest son, the current King Frederik, in January 2024 after 52 years.

Margrethe made it clear that part of the reason she gave up her responsibilities was her health.

“The surgery naturally led to thinking about the future, about whether it was time to leave the responsibility to the next generation,” Margrethe said in her speech on New Year’s Eve 2023.

She added: “I have decided that now is the right time. On January 14, 2024 – 52 years after succeeding my beloved father – I will resign from my post as queen of Denmark.”
