Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (May 20, 2026) lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and called them “traitors”. Mr. Gandhi alleged that they attacked the Constitution, usurped reservations from marginalized sections and worked to support some industrialists.
“I will never apologize and I will say it again: Narendra Modi-Amit Shah are traitors because they attacked the Constitution. Listen carefully… I am not afraid of RSS people,” Mr. Gandhi said at the Bahujan Swabhiman Sammelan in Rae Bareli.

Mr. Gandhi reiterated that a major economic crisis was looming. “The coming days will be very difficult. Inflation will be at a level the country has never seen before. Prices of everything will increase, farmers will be in trouble because there will be a shortage of fertilizers. Oil and gas supplies will be interrupted. However, this economic storm will not affect Adani-Ambani and Narendra Modi because they will continue to sit in their palaces. Whoever will be affected by this economic storm will be the ordinary people of the country.”
He also criticized the Prime Minister for his visit to Italy. “Modi gave a speech in India and said that the global situation was vulnerable. He then flew to Italy in his expensive plane, carrying a Melody candy for Meloni in his pocket [Italian Prime Minister]said the Congress leader.
Statue of Veera Pasi unveiled
At the Sammelan, Mr Gandhi unveiled the statue in Rae Bareli of Veera Pasi, who fought the British during the 1857 Rebellion, signaling renewed assistance towards the Pasi community.
Mr Gandhi also addressed a workers’ conference in Amethi, attacking the BJP government on issues such as inflation and rising unemployment. He accused the BJP of taking away land from marginal farmers and handing it over to industrialists. “The government was running the MGNREGA scheme, which provided employment to millions of people. The Modi government changed this scheme,” he said.
“The government has failed on every front and dragged the country into a quagmire. Every soldier of the Congress will continue to fight with all their strength, from the streets to the Parliament, to protect the rights of the people and the Constitution. This voice of justice rising from Amethi will now echo across the country. We must fight for the rights of the common people, who are being exploited in every possible way by the autocratic regime in power,” Mr. Gandhi said.
Mr Gandhi also visited former Congress leader Yogendra Mishra’s house and described him as a true soldier of the Congress family. He met the bereaved family members and expressed his deep condolences.
Anil Yadav, Congress leader in Uttar Pradesh, said: “In this environment, the willingness of the general public in Rae Bareli and Amethi to receive and participate in Rahul’s programs ji It was an unprecedented situation. Every worker and ordinary citizen of Uttar Pradesh stands in unity with the leader and the tour has injected new vigor into Congress workers,” Mr. Yadav said.
