Malcolm in the Middle star sparks widespread fan concern as he poses for first reunion snap

Fans of Malcolm in the Middle are worried about one of the show’s beloved cast members after a behind-the-scenes photo from the upcoming reboot went viral.
To celebrate the TV family’s long-awaited reunion, the sitcom’s lead star Frankie Muniz posted a candid shot with his on-screen siblings Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson (aka Reese and Francis) on Instagram on Thursday.
“I was told not to post this yet, but then I remembered the theme song,” Muniz joked in the caption, referencing Boss of Me, the opening track of the popular Fox series that ran from 2000 to 2006 and won seven Emmys. ‘I’m so excited for you to see the new episodes and I miss my siblings.’
While fans were excited to see the trio together again, the photo sparked a wave of concern for Berfield, who posed between Muniz and Masterson, giving followers a double take on the strikingly different look 20 years after the show ended.
One commented: ‘Reese??? Baby, is that you????’ while another wrote: ‘Yes, she got a lot skinnier than the show!!’
Other fans echoed the same sentiment, asking, ‘Reese? Blink twice if you’re nice’ and ‘I didn’t even recognize him.’

The Daily Mail did not receive a response to a request for comment from Berfield.
Some fans went further, with one saying ‘he looks so different’ and another asking: ‘Who’s the random British guy?’ he joked.
Another joked: ‘LOL Reese looks like she’s European.’
Berfield, 39, who started acting in a Folgers coffee commercial when he was just five years old, moved away from Hollywood after the end of Malcolm in the Middle.
He then moved behind the scenes and became Chief Creative Officer of Virgin Productiond, the entertainment arm of Richard Branson’s Virgin Group.
To talk Diversity In 2010 he explained: ‘We develop and produce unconventional films and television programmes. ‘We’re not afraid to push the boundaries when it comes to content.’
He told me a year later Agoura Hills Patch What inspired his move from actor to producer was this: ‘I realized that I had been in two TV series with over 100 episodes and felt fulfilled as an actor, so I decided to try my hand at producing.

Fans expressed their concerns on social media
‘I think people are constantly searching for fulfillment and nothing is ever good enough, but I feel like I’ve been lucky enough to have made the journey I’ve had so far.’
Comparing her two careers, she added: ‘They are both unique in their own way, but I enjoy what I do and where I am now.
‘This is a whole new level of stress. It’s a different kind of stress, but both are rewarding.’
Berfield now lives a much more private life and raises two children with his wife Liza Almeida, whom he married in 2017.
Meanwhile, in the comments on Muniz’s post, others turned their attention to another missing Malcolm alum, youngest brother Dewey, originally played by Erik Per Sullivan.
As one fan explained in the comments section, ‘For those who wanted Dewey, another actor will replace him because Dewey (the actor) wanted to focus on his work so they would respect his decision.’
Justin Berfield began his acting career at the age of five, but his breakout role was as Reese, Malcom’s impulsive and foolish older brother.
After the series ended, Justin moved behind the camera and began working as Creative Director at production company Virgin Products (Picture taken in February 2025)
This theory was later confirmed by Bryan Cranston, who played Muniz’s parents on the hit series alongside Jane Kaczmarek.
“I talked to Erik and said, ‘Hey, we got the show! He’ll be back.” “Oh, that’s great!” And I said, “Yeah, so we can’t wait for you to come back.” Appearing on the Fly on the Wall podcast in June, Cranston said, “Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do that. But it’s great that you’re doing this,” he said.
‘He actually goes to Harvard,’ the actor added. ‘He’s really smart and I think he’s doing his master’s degree at Harvard right now. He said, “Oh God, no, I haven’t been acting since I was nine. So I’m not interested in that.”
When news of the reboot titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair was announced last December, it was confirmed that both Cranston and Kaczmarek would be reprising their iconic roles.
Berfield and Masterson later signed on for a four-episode Disney+ animated series starring Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s girlfriend.
Newcomers Vaughan Murrae, Keeley Karsten and Caleb Ellsworth-Clark round out the cast; Ellsworth-Clark especially steps into the role of Dewey.
Reflecting on last month’s experience, Muniz admitted that the project exceeded his expectations.
“I’m not exaggerating when I say filming this reboot, it’s like I loved it so much, so much more than I thought I would,” he said on a podcast.
‘I think people will be kind of surprised by where everyone is and the story. But only four episodes… Isn’t it difficult to fit a 20-year-old story into four 30-minute episodes?
‘But I think people will be very happy with what they come up with.’
