Openai said on Thursday that he launched a Stargate -branded AI Data Center in Norway and marked the first raid on Europe with such a project.
The British company Nscale will design and build the site as part of the 50-50 joint venture with Norway Energy Infrastructure company Aker.
Openai will be the so -called “buyer” in the project, that is, the data center will effectively buy capacity.
“Part of this project is to partner with Openai and to publish additional services and features to the European continent,” NSCALE CEO Josh Payne said in an interview on Thursday. ” He said.
The site aims to offer 100,000 NVIDIA graphic processing units (GPU) by the end of 2026, “with the intention of expanding significantly in the coming years,” he said. Companies, the data center will work with completely renewable power and 230 megawatt capacity, which will make it one of the largest in Europe, he said.
Nvidia’s GPUs have become the actual selection for data centers due to their ability to address large AI workloads.
For the Norway project, Nscale and Aker committed approximately 1 billion dollars to the first 20MW stage of the project. The site will be located in KVANTAL just outside Narvik in Northern Norway. Companies, the region “abundant hydroelectric, low local electricity demand and limited transmission capacity,” he said.
Payne refused to comment on how Nscale will finance this project or how the project will finance its financial benefits to the company. CEO said that there is no plan for additional Stargate data centers, but NSCALE is its own “solid European expansion plan”.
Stargate was initially launched as a infrastructure project between Openai in the USA this year. ProphecyJapan’s Softbank and the UAE’s MGX. The project aims to invest $ 500 billion and create AI infrastructure for the next four years.
Openai tried to take this initiative globally. In June, the company and its partners planned to build a Stargate Campus in the UAE.
Meanwhile, Europe is pushing the concept of “sovereign AI”, which requires the presence and processing of data centers and AI workloads in European territory.
Payne said that Europe has two “problems” – the first is that it does not have sufficient information processing capacity and the second is “multi -part”.
“What is the need for continental AI infrastructure projects distribution distribution [power]. The ecosystem can consume from the project to create AI products, to increase efficiency and economic benefit. “He said.
Companies such as Nvidia and Openai also offer their ability to offer sovereign AI while trying to expand their business.
On a trip to Europe this year, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called on the continent to build more AI infrastructure. The French AI company Mistral announced that NVIDIA is planning to use GPUs in a new data center planned for France.
