Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Friday that his province will stop airing ads in which former President Ronald Reagan criticized tariffs after this weekend’s World Series games so trade talks between Canada and the United States can continue.
Ford’s announcement about the X comes a day after President Donald Trump ended trade talks with Canada over the ad.
Ford said he spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney before deciding to pause the ad effective Monday “so trade talks could continue.”
When Trump canceled these meetings, he referred to the following allegations: Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute that the ad misrepresented Reagan’s radio address on April 25, 1987, and that the lyrics were changed without permission.
“Our goal was always to spark a discussion about the type of economy Americans want to build and the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses,” Ford said of the ad airing in US markets.
“We achieved our goal by reaching audiences in the United States at the highest level,” Ford said. “I have instructed my team to continue to put our message in front of Americans throughout the weekend so that we can run our ad during the first two World Series games.”
