A Rhode Island teenager out on bail for a weapons charge has been arrested in connection with a stabbing at a crowded beach earlier this week that sent beachgoers fleeing in panic.

Willy Medina, 18, a Pawtucket resident, was taken into custody by Rhode Island State Police on Friday. It will be turned over to the Narragansett Police Department.

He was charged with one count of aggravated assault and appeared in court Friday, Narragansett Police Chief Kyle Rekas said.

No suspects could be identified at that time. Rekas did not specify how investigators linked Medina to the violence on the beach.

Officials said other disturbances broke out at the time as hundreds of people on the beach tried to leave at the same time.

Two unidentified adults were arrested and charged with simple assault, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice. Police noted that these arrests did not appear to be connected to the stabbings.
