The 10 most and least affordable countries for expats in 2025

Increasing living costs and global economic uncertainty continued to be financially difficult, some expats have found that moving abroad could be easier in their wallets.

The study, which has been carried out every year since 2014, has collected insight from more than 10,000 expatriates representing 172 nations living in countries and regions around the world.
For the personal finance index, survey participants were asked to rating their satisfaction with their financial situations, overall life costs and disposable household revenues to live a comfortable life in the countries where they reside.

Asian countries have dominated the list when it comes to the personal financing of expats, five out of the top 10 countries from Southeast Asia: Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia.
According to the report, “Compared to 2024, nine of the top 10 countries maintains this title. Only Malaysia (9th) is a new addition last year, 11th place.” In particular, no European country has made the list.
In Vietnam, 89% of the participants were pleased with the general living cost, while 87% of the participants said that disposable household revenues were enough to live a comfortable life compared to global 40% and 69%, respectively.
This financial respiratory chamber can explain why some expatriates leave the roots in the country -54% live there for five or more years and 30% want to stay forever.
Colombia and Panama ranked second and third, respectively.
The majority of the participants in Colombia said that their disposable revenues were enough to live easily – globally 92% compared to 69%. Furthermore, no immigrants in the country did not mark the cost of living as a major concern before moving, which is a global an average of 21% contrast than international.
