In the United States, the first case of a screw parasite with a fatal meat eaten. A person in Maryland was treated for parasitic after traveling from Guatemala, who followed an epidemic among the animals that started in Central America and South Mexico at the end of last year.
Parasitic enters the meat of cattle and other hot -blooded animals while survived and may be fatal if left untreated. South Dakota’s state veterinarian Beth Thompson said on Sunday that he was informed about the first US case last week and that the Maryland State government official confirmed the case. Reuters, the individual has now been implemented by many prevention measures.
HHS spokesman Andrew Nixon, Reuters, said, “This is the first human case of the new world screw wolf myiyasis (parasitic invasion of fly larvae) associated with traveling from a country affected by the outbreaks defined in the United States.” He said.
The parasite can be fatal between cattle and wildlife previously infected with people outside the United States.
The female screw fly lay eggs on the wounds of the open animals that will then come out of the egg. The screw pale larvae uses their sharp mouths to be buried through live meat.
If cases are detected early enough, animals and people can survive, while parasitic treatment involves removing hundreds of screwed larvae.
Disease Control and Prevention Centers (CDC) said: “Infestations are very painful. If there is an invasion of a new world screw worm (NW), you can see maggots in an open wound or open wound. They can also be in your nose, eyes or mouth.”
Although the parasite was completely eliminated from North America decades, the invasion of cattle has increased in South America for the last few years.
In 2023, the cases in Panama rose and the following years were reported in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Mexico.
Earlier this year, the US suspended animal husbandry imports, including cattle and horses on the Mexican border due to the spread of parasites to the country.
The US Agricultural Secretary has recently traveled to Texas to announce their plans to build a sterile fly facility there in order to combat parasites and promised to bring out their traveling to Texas and again.
The facility produces a large amount of male flies and sterilizes them over time to collapse the population.
