Homeowners told to use salt and vinegar on windows within 24 hours

Homes across the UK are being advised to use salt and vinegar on their windows as temperatures drop. As thickening season approaches, experts are encouraging property owners to maintain their windows to prevent ideal conditions for dangerous black mold.
They suggest that basic kitchen ingredients such as salt and vinegar may be sufficient to prevent mold growth. Mold can begin to grow indoors within 24 hours of exposure to moisture, necessitating rapid response.
Martin Wong, Co-Founder of Bringnox Blinds, said: “Most people just wipe off the condensation and move on, but dampness keeps coming back. In the colder months, the warm, moist air inside our homes meets the cold window surfaces and the condensation then settles. It often grows around the frames, creating the perfect environment for mold to develop unnoticed.”
Martin recommends these two natural methods to combat condensation and mold on windows:
- Place a bowl of salt on your windowsill: Salt naturally attracts and absorbs moisture from the surrounding atmosphere. For most properties, a small plate placed near each window is sufficient.
You will understand when replacement is necessary.
The salt will appear wet and begin to form lumps, usually within a few days. Clean windows with vinegar spray – Make your own natural window cleaning solution by mixing a bottle of vinegar with water. - With its acetic acid content, vinegar acts as a natural mold killer, eliminating over 80% of common types of household mold. Gently spray the mixture directly onto areas where mold is present and let it work for at least an hour before wiping down the surface.
Martin said: “These simple, chemical-free solutions address moisture before it becomes a mold problem. Prevention is much easier than dealing with the health risks and property damage that come with established mold growth. Investing in insulated window curtains or shutters is one of the best long-term solutions.”
“They create a thermal barrier that keeps warm air inside your living space. By maintaining a consistent temperature near your windows, you reduce the buildup of moisture that often causes condensation.”
