US troops could ‘refuse to invade Greenland’ as Trump’s attack plan in tatters | World | News

A former Conservative MP and defense expert has suggested that US troops may refuse to invade Greenland and that if President Donald Trump decides on military action “it will be interesting to see whether US troops follow orders”.
Tobias Ellwood told the Daily Express: “European troops will withdraw. America will remain the most formidable military power in the world by a certain margin. The idea that European nations can overwhelm America… this will lead to a point of no return for generations. “It would be interesting to see whether US troops follow orders because there is a huge legal debate about whether this is allowed.
“Imagine being an American soldier and being told ‘your enemies are now the British’ and potentially having to kill the men you trained with. That’s the kind of NATO civil war you don’t even want to think about.”
He added: “The invasion of Greenland plays entirely into the hands of China and Russia, and they will enjoy this fight between their NATO allies.
“NATO is about to fall apart and fall apart, and that won’t do America any good in the long run. If we have to deal with Russia alone, we won’t be there. That will weaken America in the long run.”
Today (Friday, January 16), President Trump threatened to impose tariffs on countries that do not support his desire to purchase Greenland.
He told reporters: “I can impose tariffs on countries that are not compatible with Greenland. We need Greenland for national security, so I can do that.”
Copenhagen and Washington are in “fundamental disagreement” over the future of Greenland, Danish foreign ministers said after talks at the White House on Wednesday. Large demonstrations are planned to be held in Denmark and Greenland on Saturday to protest Trump’s territorial ambitions. Thousands of people said on social media that they would attend protests organized by Greenland associations in Nuuk and Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg and Odense.
