Electric vehicle sales have increased to break the highest record, but defenders warn that it should not be used as an excuse to impose taxes and cut incentives.

In the March quarter, the Australians purchased 29,244 new battery electric vehicles in three months from 17,901 sales until June 30.

According to the Australian Automobile Association, an increase of 63.37 percent, which rose from 6.29 percent to 9.31 percent in June quarter of electric vehicles.

The increase in sales, as more people go to electric vehicles and due to fuel consumption decreases, a way to finance maintenance is due to the occurrence of momentum of the user fee.

However, the Electric Vehicle Council says that the result is deprived of what is necessary for a self -sustaining market and that the federal government should not withdraw or -bring taxes.

“We’re still in the first stages of the transition, Jul Julie Delvecchio, CEO, said.

“Electric vehicles must constitute at least 30 percent of all new vehicle sales in Australia.

The productivity commission recently proposed tax exemption and road user fee for electric vehicles.

However, the Council argued that existing policies and tax incentives have increased growth in electric vehicle sales in recent years.

“These suggested changes will suddenly stop the passage of (electric vehicles) that benefit everyone through lower energy bills and cleaner air,“ Delvecchio said.

“With Australia’s largest source of emissions by 2030, it is necessary to support and motivate Australians to choose electric vehicles.”

Treasurer Jim Chalmers, a possible way to work with the states and regions is working in a user fee, but there is no time frame, he said.

On Wednesday, “the status quo will not work within 10 or 20 years because less people will use gasoline cars and more people electric vehicles and we still need to finance the roads,” he said.

“But people should not guess that there will be a change very soon.”
