India and Bangladesh are probably at the lowest point of their relations since 1971. While India proceeded cautiously, the freedom given by the Yunus Government to radical Islamist leaders in Bangladesh created an uncertain environment for diplomatic relations. Amid the worsening situation, intelligence agencies learned that the ISI had made a deliberate attempt to provoke India into attacking Bangladesh, thereby garnering international attention. ISI-backed elements are provoking people by saying that India is supporting its own party, Awami League, while protecting ousted leader Sheikh Hasina.

According to the IANS report, there is a significant amount of anti-India sentiment that the ISI has managed to cultivate in the past year. But the systematic persecution of the minority community, especially the Hindus, is a clear attempt to provoke India. Disturbing images of the lynching of a Hindu man have been doing the rounds for the last few days.

ISI-backed lobbies are deliberately provoking the public by making these clips viral in India. The aim is to provoke the people of India to such an extent that they pressure the government to take military action against Bangladesh. The other aim is to portray India as the aggressor in the international community.

However, India is well aware of Pakistan’s conspiracy as New Delhi defines its role not as the aggressor but as the defender of its integrity and sovereignty. Experts say New Delhi has a lot to handle when it comes to the situation in Bangladesh. India has argued that it wants good relations with its neighbours. With the Awami League out of action due to the election ban, India is reaching out to the Bangladesh National Party (BNP). Any government that is friendly with India will harm Pakistan and this is something it will try to avoid at all costs.

However, Indian Chief of Army Staff General Anil Chauhan argued that India knows its enemies and should not allow its deterrence level to be breached.

Chief of Army Staff General Anil said, “The question is: What kind of threats and challenges should India be prepared for? I think it should be based on two fundamental facts. First, both our enemies are nuclear-armed/nuclear-weapon states. We should not allow this level of deterrence to be breached. We have territorial disputes with both. We must be ready to fight short-duration, high-intensity conflicts like Operation Sindoor to deter terrorism.” Chauhan speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

CDS Chauhan added that India should be prepared for a land-centric, protracted conflict as India has territorial disputes with its neighbours. He said that while India should try to avoid any conflict, take advantage of new areas and create asymmetries with our weaker rival, but should not allow these asymmetries to be exploited by other nations.

“War in new territories is faster and smarter. Also, its duration is shorter and the tempo of this war is very, very high. Decisions are compressed in time and the effects of this war are felt almost instantly. This was clearly seen in Operation Sindoor, a war that lasted only four days and gave India a decisive victory. But all areas of the war were used simultaneously with great tempo,” he said.
