Ashes: Who might England turn to for 2027 contest against Australia?

The Rews aren’t the only siblings who are expected to have great futures.

Rehan Ahmed was the youngest man to play Test cricket for England when he burst onto the scene in Pakistan in 2022; His 17-year-old brother Farhan, who like Rehan is an off-spinner rather than a leggie, became the youngest bowler to take five wickets in first-class cricket in Britain when he scored seven for Nottinghamshire against Surrey in 2024.

Rehan was another name on this winter’s Lions trip. Many felt he should have been included in the full Test squad after his strong season for Leicestershire.

Farhan played for the Lions this year and will take part in the Under-19 World Cup group.

After Shoaib Bashir’s tour as a beverage carrier, England are back at square one in their search for a front-line spinner.

Rehan, who scored five centuries and took 23 wickets in the 2025 State Championship Second Division, could be a more versatile player in the future.

Lancashire left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, who has not added to his five Test caps since the 2024 tour of India, was with the Lions in Australia and don’t forget Somerset’s Jack Leach.

He was the top wicket-taker among spinners in the County Championship last season and, at 34, he is still desperate to regain his place in the Test.
