Hundreds of items of ‘cultural significance’ stolen from Bristol Museum archive

More than 600 items have been stolen from Bristol Museum’s collection of artworks dating back to the 19th century, Avon and Somerset Police said, as they appealed for more information.

It was understood that the theft occurred on September 25, when high-value items belonging to the British Empire and Commonwealth collections were stolen between 01.00 and 02.00 in the morning.

Detectives are seeking to speak to four people they believe could assist them with investigations and have released CCTV footage of them.

DC Dan Burgan, officer in charge of the incident, said: “The theft of many items of significant cultural value is a significant loss for the city.

“These items, many of which are donations, form part of a collection that sheds light on a multi-layered part of British history and we hope the public can help us bring those responsible to justice.

“Our investigations so far have included significant CCTV investigations as well as forensic investigations and victim liaison.

The men are described as follows:

  • First male: white, medium to thick build, white hat, black jacket, light-colored trousers and black sneakers
  • Second male: white, slim build, wearing a gray hooded jacket, black trousers and black sneakers
  • Male three: white, with a green hat, black jacket, light shorts and white sneakers. He appears to walk with a slight limp in his right leg.
  • Male four: white, of heavy build, wearing a two-tone orange and navy blue/black puffer jacket, black trousers, and black and white sneakers.

The British Empire and Commonwealth collection contains thousands of historical objects, photographs and films that Bristol Museum says document “the links between Britain and countries in the British Empire from the late 19th century to recent times”.

This is breaking news, more to come…
