Teen jailed for killing ‘charming’ 16-year-old boy who cried out ‘help’ before dying | UK | News

A teenager was sentenced to at least 16 years in prison Monday for fatally stabbing an “attractive” and “enthusiastic” 16-year-old boy in the neck at a New Year’s Eve fireworks event. Areece Lloyd-Hall, 18, attacked Harry Pitman, who accidentally bumped into another boy while they were fighting in Primrose Hill, north London, the Old Bailey heard.

The incident occurred in front of police officers and hundreds of stunned revelers who gathered at the popular park to watch fireworks over the River Thames on December 31, 2023. Lloyd-Hall, of Westminster, was found guilty of murder and possession of an offensive weapon on October 29 following two trials.

In a televised sentencing, Mr Justice Cavanagh said Harry was a normal 16-year-old, “loud and enthusiastic” and “full of charm”.

He said Lloyd-Hall was carrying a knife not for protection as he claimed at his trial, but to feel “strong” and “to show off”.

The judge told him: “You stabbed Harry because you lost your temper with him and acted like a big man in front of your friends.”

In that “one second” she must have realized that Harry could be killed or injured, but Mr Justice Cavanagh said: “He did not care at the moment whether he lived or died.”

The judge added that the case clearly demonstrated the dangers of young people carrying knives in public and should serve as a “warning and deterrent”.

Earlier, Harry’s older sister Tayla Lohan told how the family was struggling to come to terms with the “senseless and brutal” way Harry was killed.

In his statement to the court, he said that when his parents heard that his son was injured, they ran to the park to be with their son.

Reading a victim impact statement on behalf of the family, she said: “As a family we all feel guilty, 2023 was the first year we didn’t all celebrate together. Harry went out to celebrate with his friends and didn’t come home.”

Saying that the sound of fireworks at any time of the year triggers her sadness, Lohan said, “There will never be a happy New Year for our family again.”

He described Harry as bright, full of energy and a natural entrepreneur who had studied law at university and aspired to follow his great-grandfather into a career in the Army.

He is also a keen Tottenham Hotspur football supporter and boxing fan and is popular with his peers, he said.

Earlier, prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward KC described how “compassion turned into tragedy in the blink of an eye” on New Year’s Eve 2023.

Harry and Lloyd-Hall were strangers to each other and had gone to watch the fireworks with different groups of friends.

Earlier in the evening, special constable David Smith said Harry appeared excited and “physically jumped towards him” for a friendly chat.

He proceeded to “fist bump” with another man who had gone to watch the fireworks with his family.

The fatal incident appears to have been sparked when Harry accidentally bumped into another child while “playing a fighting game” shortly after 11.30pm.

A fight then broke out and mobile phone footage shown to the jury showed Lloyd-Hall pulling a knife from his waistband and swinging it at Harry’s neck as the victim went to punch him.

In the footage, the knife sheath was seen flying in the air during the fast-developing incident.

Harry clutched his neck, his white T-shirt covered in blood, as he made his way through the crowd calling for “help” to officers.

Minutes later, shortly before midnight, he collapsed and died.

It was determined that the sheath of the knife was left at the scene and the defendant’s DNA was found on it.

Following media objection, Lloyd-Hall went to Hammersmith police station with his father on 4 January 2024.

University student Lloyd-Hall, who was 16 at the time, claimed at her trials that she thought she had only shot Harry with a holster in an attempt to get him away from her.

He said he ran away without realizing what was happening because he had a knife in his hand and knew there were police officers nearby.

Jurors were told Lloyd-Hall had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and suffered from cannabis-induced paranoia.

He may also have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, triggered by witnessing a previous stabbing in June 2023 and the loss of a friend to a stabbing.

Defense barrister David Bentley KC, referring to a handwritten letter at Lloyd-Hall in mitigation, said: “I’m sorry I caused this, to be honest I am.”

Mr Bentley said: “He won’t say it wasn’t his fault. He now realizes that he was a naive, immature, stubborn 16-year-old who should have sought help for his problems.”

“He also realizes that he has caused terrible trauma not only to Harry’s family but also to his own family.”
