Denmark talks China, Russia threat to Greenland amid Trump clash

Denmark’s foreign minister admitted that he shared concerns with President Donald Trump and US officials about Greenland’s vulnerability to Chinese and Russian influence, despite his staunch opposition to a US takeover.

“There is absolutely no Chinese footprint in Greenland,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said in “Special Report” on Wednesday. “However… there is always a grain of truth in what he says. [Trump] “he says.”

The remarks follow a visit by Danish and Greenlandic leaders to Washington this week to meet with Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Rasmussen remained defiant against the US occupation and warned that it would be “the end of NATO”.

“We all belong to NATO. And we think our way forward should be, you know, to join forces. So, to some extent, we share the concerns, but we don’t share the methods, if I may put it that way,” he said.

Former US Ambassador to Denmark Carla Sands rejected Rasmussen’s view, saying Denmark did not have the necessary resources to defend the region against enemies. He warned that both Russia and China were actively trying to gain a foothold in the region.

“The Greenlanders will be independent in the 21st century,” Sands said on “The Ingraham Angle” on Wednesday, pointing out that Iceland separated from Denmark in the 20th century.

“President Trump is making sure they don’t fall into the arms of China or Russia,” he added.

Greenland has pushed for independence from Denmark, but its leaders have signaled they are not interested in becoming part of the United States. Still, Trump has repeatedly mentioned that securing Greenland is a priority.

“The United States needs Greenland for national security purposes,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday.

He said Greenland was an integral part of the country’s Golden Dome project, the US-proposed missile defense shield. Trump added that if the US did not secure the region, “Russia or China will do it” and called on NATO to support US efforts to gain control of Greenland.
