Trump to hike global tariffs to 15% from 10%, ‘effective immediately’

President Donald Trump said Saturday he would raise global tariffs from 10% to 15%, a day after the Supreme Court struck down his “reciprocal” tariffs.

“I, as President of the United States, will, effective immediately, increase the 10% World Tariff on Countries, many of which have “exploited” the United States for decades, with impunity (until I show up!) to the fully permissible and legally tested level of 15%,” he wrote.

Trump warned in his social media post that additional customs duties would also be imposed.

“In the coming short months, the Trump Administration will determine and issue new, legally permissible Tariffs,” he wrote.

While Trump’s announcement claimed that the new tariffs would come into force without delay, it is unclear whether any official documents were signed. The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

The mandate increase comes after the Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 tariff decision on Friday that Trump wrongfully invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose his tariffs.

Trump responded the same day with a 10% global tariff, using his authority under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act. The statute only allows the president to impose temporary taxes, and any extension requires congressional approval.

The president was harsh in his comments against the Supreme Court decision, saying in a social media post that the decision was “ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily un-American.”

He also attacked Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, who voted with the majority on the decision.
