Jye Gray knocks back R360 riches to remain at South Sydney Rabbitohs

Jye Gray has clawed back the riches offered in Rugby 360’s breakaway competition to stay in South Sydney.

Gray had been offered a deal worth US$600,000 ($920,000) per year to change the codes; It’s a big pay rise considering he’s on just under $200,000 for this year and next year at the Rabbitohs. The R360 deal was even more attractive considering that some or all of the money could be declared tax-free, depending on where committed players reside.

One factor that makes things difficult for potential league defectors is that any player or manager who enters into negotiations with R360 faces a 10-year ban.

Sources assessing the NRL’s stance and contract extension offer, speaking anonymously for confidentiality, said Gray had decided to remain as Rabbi. The agreement has not been officially signed yet, but it is expected to happen soon.

Gray has been an unlikely star for the Rabbitohs, making 19 NRL appearances this season after making 13 appearances in 2024. The 21-year-old has successfully completed the full-back role following Latrell Mitchell’s injury and could take on the role full-time in 2026.

At one point earlier in the year, Dally was the M medal leader and was rewarded with selection in the Prime Minister’s XIII side that defeated Papua New Guinea.

Gray has a history in the 15-man code. He made his mark on rugby for three years at Southport School, a prestigious GPS school on the Gold Coast, and the school’s former coach Mike Wallace rated the assistant among the best players he ever managed. Queensland Reds also expressed interest at one point, but he will focus on his league career.

While Gray’s decision was a blow to R360, their main focus was on registering established rugby talent rather than NRL players. But they still have a chance to snag a few rugby league players.
