Warning issued to anyone with washing machine or dishwasher in kitchen | UK | News

Fire crews warned everyone who has a washing machine or dishwasher in their kitchen.

Christmas is a busy time of year for our kitchens, and indeed the whole household, as people stay at home and settle in for the festive season.

Therefore, the kitchen is constantly filled with cooking and cleaning; This may mean that the dishwasher, as well as other white goods such as washing machines and tumble dryers, are activated more frequently than usual.

There’s so much to do at Christmas that many households will try to save time and even money by turning off their washing machines and dishwashers overnight.

However, firefighters warn residents not to use electrical appliances while in bed due to the increased risk of the house burning.

In a warning posted on its official Facebook page, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Myth: It’s safe to run the dishwasher while you sleep.

“Fact: Most appliance fires start when no one is watching.

“Tip: Only use dishwashers, tumble dryers, and washing machines when you’re awake and at home. A fire is much more dangerous if it starts while you’re outside or asleep.”

This is supported by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

He warns there is a ‘misconception’ that it is cheaper to run the dishwasher at night. He said: “There is a misconception, recently exacerbated by social media, that it is cheaper to use electricity during off-peak hours at night.

“This is not the case for most households unless you are subject to an off-peak or time-of-use tariff, as is the case with minority households.

“If a fire breaks out during the night, the risk to life is always higher as people are very likely to be asleep and have less time to react and escape the property.”

Community Safety Officer Hannah Grostate targeted washing machines and dryers, as well as dishwashers. He said: “We recognize this is a challenging time financially and we are all looking for ways to save money, but it is also important to reduce the risk of fire by following our simple safety advice.

“Please make sure that your devices will not be recalled, their cables are not damaged and they are in working order.

“Do not leave the washer, dryer or dishwasher running overnight or while you are out. They pose a fire risk due to their high wattage, friction and motors.

“Products exhibiting any problems should be unplugged and we recommend contacting the dealer, manufacturer or a qualified repair technician.

“Lastly, please make sure you have a working smoke alarm on every floor of your home and know your exit plan in the event of a fire, it can really help save your life.”
