Takeaway delivery app with 9 million UK customers announces price hike | UK | News

A popular takeaway app in the UK has increased its marketplace fees for many of its restaurant partners. Uber Eats is one of the most popular food and grocery delivery apps in the UK, with an estimated 9 million monthly users in Britain, according to digital intelligence firm Sense Tower. The delivery platform said the move was necessary to cover rising operational costs and continue investing in the market.
While commissions will still be capped at 30%, restaurants on the Lite plan will see the biggest increase, with commissions increasing from 15% to 20%. Meanwhile, the Plus tier will remain at 25%, but orders placed by Uber One members under this plan will now be subject to a 30% fee. The cost of takeout orders for restaurants is also rising, but only by 1%, rising from 6% to 7%. This only applies to businesses that confirm their in-app prices match the price customers pay in store; Those who do not approve face commissions of up to 10%.
Uber Eats said these increases will ultimately help it attract more customers to its platform and improve its delivery network.
“Uber Eats’ Marketplace Fees have remained stable for many years despite the pandemic and increases in the costs of operating our marketplace,” Uber Eats said.
“This increase in pricing will help us reinvest in ways to address greater customer demand for restaurants, courier reliability, and improved products and tools to support your business.”
The tiered marketplace system was introduced in 2021, with some restaurants gaining more visibility than others. Restaurants with low-cost plans get less visibility than those with high-cost plans.
Uber has previously shared plans to expand its food delivery business. “A key imperative is to help merchants grow by meeting their diverse needs; serving them demand across delivery, pickup and in-restaurant dining; supporting first-party, last-mile fulfillment through Uber Direct; or providing industry-leading tools like Offers, Ads and more,” CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in February.
Uber expanded its partnership with OpenTable in the US, Canada, Mexico, UK and Ireland in May last year. This allows customers to book tables at restaurants via the app.
