Talkback radio veteran John Laws dies aged 90; BBC boss and news chief quit over Trump video outrage

Political leaders and celebrities have paid tribute to talkback radio veteran John Laws, who has died aged 90.

Nicknamed “Golden Tonsils,” Laws worked in talkback radio for more than 70 years. Laws was known as a formidable interviewer of politicians of all persuasions.

Laws’ family announced his death in a statement on Sunday night, saying the former broadcaster “was in good health and in better spirits until the last few weeks.”

Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe described Laws as “a wise mentor, a mischievous buddy, and a very good friend.”

Crowe wrote of X: “He worked hard, played harder and loved it thoroughly. A legend in the best, most Australian sense of the word.”

Among those who paid tribute to Laws was Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who said he was “an iconic voice and so much more”.
