Tamil Nadu expands paddy storage by 3 lakh metric tonnes, total capacity exceeds 7 lakh tonnes

Tamil Nadu Food and Civil Supplies Minister R Sakkarapani on Friday said the state government has set up additional storage facilities for paddy with a capacity of 3 lakh metric tonnes.

He informed the House that when combined with the existing storage capacity of 4.63 lakh metric tonnes, the total infrastructure to hold paddy would exceed 7 lakh metric tonnes.

While responding to a question posed by Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami, he noted that 4,000 Direct Supply Centers are operational in Delta regions.
“Out of the existing capacity of 4.63 lakh metric tonnes, additional facilities are being set up with the capacity to hold 3 lakh metric tonnes of paddy,” he said.

Sakkarapani said the state civil supplies organization recently held a virtual meeting chaired by Chief Minister MK Stalin, which directed them to review operations in the Delta areas.

“As per the instructions of the Chief Minister, we visited the districts and held a review meeting in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore and other districts,” he said. Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Company Ltd supplies paddy in two seasons. Kuruvai (1 October and 15 December every year) and Samba (16 December – 31 July).

The company is involved in the supply, storage and distribution of essential commodities under the Public Distribution System, the company’s website said.
