End of ‘golden ticket’ asylum rules and Labour leadership talk
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood told the Sunday Times she would end the UK’s “golden ticket” asylum rules by extending the period in which a refugee can claim settled status from five to 10 years. The paper says a shorter waiting period for people arriving legally will also be approved by the government when it announces asylum plans later this week. Mahmoods adds that illegal immigration is “tearing us apart.”
Former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner spoke to the Daily Mirror and described this week’s talk of a leadership challenge in the Labor Party as “arrogant gossip”. The newspaper says this is his first interview since he resigned after admitting he had not paid taxes on his house.
But elsewhere the Sunday Telegraph claims Rayner is himself priming himself for the leadership election by boosting support among Labor MPs. A source close to the Greater Manchester MP told the newspaper his report was “complete nonsense”.
The Observer’s front page asks whether there is “political interference” at the BBC after a turbulent week in which its chief executive and head of news resigned. The newspaper had previously published an editorial describing the events that led to their separation as a “political attack”.
The front page of the Daily Mail focuses on lectures that Rutger Bregman, who has criticized Donald Trump in the past, will give at the BBC. The author, known for his books Utopia for Realists and Utopia for Humanity: A Hopeful History, will give four lectures on the BBC, one of which will be A Time for Monsters.
The Daily Express has been leading calls from Conservatives, Reformers and some industry figures for the government to cut taxes on high street businesses, especially pubs. The main headline on Sunday’s front page, claiming an impending “bloodbath”, came from shadow chancellor Mel Stride.
The Sunday People leads an update on Edward Putman, who made national headlines by claiming he won the lottery using fake tickets. Edward Putman, who was imprisoned for fraud in 2019, was previously convicted of rape and charity fraud.
Model Kelly Brook speaks to the Daily Star as she heads into the jungle for the latest series of I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here. The paper says she has “resisted brutal taunts about her figure” and quotes her as saying: “I embrace my curves, I embrace my body.”
