On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Tata Group’s top honchos, including Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata and Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met trustees over board appointments and governance issues.
Mr Noel Tata and Mr Chandrasekaran, along with Tata Trusts vice-chairman Venu Srinivasan and trustee Darius Khambata, met at Mr Shah’s residence for the meeting. Ms. Sitharaman also attended the Home Minister’s residence.
The meeting came against the backdrop of infighting between Tata Trusts Trustees over board appointments and governance issues that threaten to impact the functioning of the over $180 billion conglomerate.
Tata Trusts is the backer of the Salt-Sememuctor Group and wields a decisive influence on India’s most valuable holdah with its nearly 66% stake in the holding company Tata Sons.
Tata Trusts is said to be vertically split, with one division aligned with Mr Noel Tata, who was appointed chairman of the trusts after Ratan Tata’s death, sources said. The other grouping of four trustees is led by Mehli Mistry, who has ties to the extended Shapoorji Pallonji family, which owns about 18.37% of the Tata sons.
Mr Mistry reportedly feels he is being kept out of the loop on key issues.
Flashpoint is said to have board seats at Tata Sons, which controls the 156-year-old group comprising nearly 400 companies, including 30 listed firms, sources said.
Tata Trusts, Tata Sons and Mr Srinivasan refused to comment on this matter and comments from Mr Mistry could not be received as calls and messages remained unanswered.
“Given how significant and important the Tata group is to the country’s economy, the primary question before the government is whether it can allow an individual to take control of it. The fight between the trustees of the Tata trusts is having an impact on the Tata sons,” a source said. he said.
