Teachers agree to stage half-day strikes across Victoria in term 2
Victorian public school teachers have agreed to a statewide half-day strike in Term 2.
Victoria’s teachers will launch more industrial action in term 2, with permanent work stoppages across the state, but there will be no another full-day strike.
However, the head of the Victoria branch of the Australian Education Union did not rule out that events could escalate further in his warning to the state government and parents across the state.
AEU’s Justin Mullaly told reporters on Friday that regional half-day cuts will be made in period 2, which will run from the end of April to the end of June.
“They will start in the third week of term and will see parts of the state impose a work stoppage, so that multiple local schools in a particular geographical area will stop operating at the same time and meet and meet at the local state Labor MP’s office,” Mullaly said.
He said half-day strikes meant there would be no morning classes.
Negotiations between the AEU and the Ministry of Education regarding teachers’ push for better pay and working conditions were held on Friday morning and are ongoing. Union members agreed to take further industrial action.
Mullaly said there were no new proposals for wage increases from the government on Friday morning.
