Team GB’s Super Sunday! Britain win ANOTHER gold medal as skeleton star Matt Weston tops the podium again on historic day at Winter Olympics

Tabby Stoecker and Matt Weston claimed Team GB’s second gold medal on super Sunday in the mixed team skeleton event at the Winter Olympics.

Winning his second gold medal of the Games, Weston made a dazzling run to close the gap by 0.30 seconds after he and Stoecker took fourth place.

Her time of 58.59 seconds was a record and allowed the top-seeded pair in the event to win by 0.17 seconds.

They edged out German rivals Susanne Kehrer and Axel Jungk, who won the silver medal, and Jacqueline Pfeifer and Christopher Grotheer, who won the bronze medal.

Speaking about the BBC’s coverage of the event following Weston’s achievements, two-time Olympic bobsled racer John Jackson said: ‘This was absolutely flawless!

‘He was the cream of everyone’s crop on this track.

‘This is history. It was the first time Great Britain had won three gold medals in one winter match.

‘He continues to raise the bar to new standards and it was absolutely nail-biting as Tabby couldn’t quite give him the run he wanted to give it a shot.

‘Matt Weston absolutely destroyed the field and most of it was done in the first 50 metres.

‘First Briton to win two gold medals. “What an amazing achievement.”

The victory ensured Team GB won three gold medals at a single Winter Olympics for the first time after Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale claimed victory for the snowboard cross-country mixed team earlier on Sunday.

Weston also won gold in the men’s skeleton competition on Friday.

It was also the first time Team GB won two gold medals on the same day at one Games.

On the other hand, Freya Tarbit and Marcus Wyatt missed the bronze medal for Team GB by a very narrow margin of 0.01 seconds.

Speaking after his victory, Weston said: ‘Luckily I felt I knew what I had to do.

‘It’s all a bit of a whirlwind, I got confidence from the individual event and in my mind I just had to be pretty dull and get the job done.’

The mixed team skeleton event was held for the first time in Milan-Cortina and saw slides raced down the track one after another, with 15 pairs competing.

Weston and Stoecker were the last pair to race, which further ratcheted up the tension before their remarkable victory capped a memorable day for the Brits in Italy.
