Putin Opens the Door to India’s Secret Future
Russia has officially offered India the local production of its flagship fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the Su-57, which can run at 2,100 km per hour and hit targets 1,900 km away.
According to Indian Defense News, this proposal was discussed during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi and the annual India-Russia summit. Officials on both sides see this as a major step in defense cooperation.
Russia’s state defense giant ROSTEC (a state-owned defense and technology holding) has announced that it is ready to set up a full Su-57 production line in India. The first few aircraft will come from Russia, while the factory in India will be built step by step. The plan aims to deliver 20-30 aircraft within three to four years, reaching 70-100 aircraft by the early 2030s.
The proposal includes deep technology transfer (40-60% of the jet will be produced domestically). Indian engineers would gain access to the source code, secret design methods, signature reduction technologies and advanced avionics that define modern air dominance.
Where Will India Build the Su-57?
The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) facility in Nashik is at the forefront. The facility already assembles Su-30MKI fighter jets, and Russian experts believe that the Su-57E version will require only a 30% restructuring of existing infrastructure.
Experts say this offer is much more than an offer to buy. This is a chance to introduce fifth-generation know-how into India’s aerospace sector. Engineers working on the program will be truly exposed to stealth structures and next-generation radar systems that directly feed India’s AMCA targets.
The proposal also allows New Delhi to chart its own path that is not dependent on American platforms such as the F-35A. It strengthens India’s long-term goal of strategic autonomy.
Russia’s Drone Offer to India
Apart from the fighter jet offer, Russia has also offered local production of Lancet attack drones in India. This includes sharing engine technology, sensors and low-signature lightweight materials.
If approved, Nashik could become a combined manufacturing hub for next-generation stealth fighter jets and advanced attack drones.
Defense analysts believe this will give a historic boost to India’s manufacturing ecosystem and enhance the skills of thousands of engineers and technicians.
Indian experts have already described the package as a “game-changing” opportunity and say it fits perfectly with the Make and Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) plans in India.
What Russia promises
ROSTEC’s announcement comes after months of high-level discussions. Moscow has assured India of its readiness to provide India with technologies specifically tailored to India’s needs.
If the deal goes forward, India will join a very small club of nations producing and co-developing fifth-generation stealth aircraft. This will also strengthen India-Russia aviation cooperation for decades and give the Indian Air Force an advantage as the next era of air combat unfolds.
