Teen driver identified in deadly MoPac crash
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department has identified the person killed in a crash that closed southbound lanes of the MoPac Expressway for several hours Tuesday.
Police believe the incident was a rear-end collision between two vehicles traveling southbound on MoPac, near the U.S. Highway 183 and Anderson Lane exit.
One of the drivers involved in the crash, 19-year-old Jonhatan Rodriguez, died at the scene at 9:27 a.m., APD said. APD said the other driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with police.
“Investigators believe the fatal injury is consistent with trauma sustained during the collision,” APD said in a press release.
The crash happened just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday. The highway reopened around 12:30 p.m. after detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding the crash.

This crash is considered Austin’s 88th fatal crash of the year and killed 92 people, APD said. In 2024, when this accident took place, 87 fatal accidents resulted in 90 deaths. Police said the investigation is still ongoing.
