Teen’s firecracker stunt sparks bushfire emergency

A teenager accused of launching fireworks into a wooded area on New Year’s Eve, sparking a wildfire that threatened homes, has been charged.
Nearly 800 homes and businesses lost power as the fire east of Perth Airport in Western Australia approached properties near Maida Vale, Forrestfield and Kalamunda.
Arson investigations have charged a 19-year-old man with breach of duty after he allegedly ignited a fire by throwing fireworks into dry grass just after midnight.
The emergency was exacerbated on Thursday as temperatures rose and fire threatened homes and property, downgrading the Emergency WA warning to watch and act.
An evacuation center has opened at High Wycombe Community and Recreation Centre, where residents are alerted to variable fire conditions.
Firefighters worked through the night to contain the blaze as it moved west, destroying more than 25 hectares of native bush.
The teenager was expected to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday.
