Asrani was embarrassed after working with Sunny Leone in this film, called it ‘terrible, horrible’: ‘I did not know…’

Asrani, who regretted her role in the adult comedy Mastizaade in 2016, said that she was ashamed to have worked in this movie. Directed by Milap Milan Zaveri, the film featured Tusshar Kapoor, Vir Das and Sunny Leone in dual roles.

Veteran actor Asrani, who passed away on Monday at the age of 84, became one of the most loved comedians of Indian cinema, appearing in more than 300 films. His most famous films included Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Namak Haraam, Hera Pheri, Malamaal Weekly and Dhamaal.

Asrani on increasing vulgarity in Indian comedy films

Asrani had once spoken candidly about the increasing vulgarity in comedy films in Bollywood. In an interview with PTI in 2016, Asrani said that it was comedy icon Mehmood who introduced double-entendre dialogues but said the trend later took a vulgar turn in Hindi cinema, including films like Mastizaade, which he regretted doing. “Mehmood Sahab started using double meaning dialogues and some of them worked, while others tried to cash in on the formula. At that time it was still double meaning but now it is vulgar, all that remains is to take off the clothes,” he said.

Asrani regretted working in Mastizaade

Asrani, who regretted her role in the adult comedy Mastizaade in 2016, said that she was ashamed to have worked in this movie. “It’s terrible and terrible (the vulgarity seen in movies these days). I didn’t know the movie would be made this way,” said the late actor, adding that he stayed away from saying double-meaning dialogues throughout his career. Asrani believed that audiences would eventually return to cinema based on family values. He concluded: “People are now realizing this, the multiplex audience is saying that we don’t like this vulgarity and this phase will pass soon. This won’t last long because fundamentally we Indians are family-oriented people.”

Besides Asrani, the film also featured Shaad Randhawa, Suresh Menon, Sushmita Mukherjee and Vivek Vaswani in supporting roles.
