Tens of thousands march in Serbia’s capital, demand snap vote

Belgrade (Reuters) -Bins protesters walked quietly to Belgrade on Monday to commemorate the deaths of 16 people killed when a roof in a renewed train station collapsed, and President Aleksandar Vucic and the ruling SNS party demanded instant elections they hoped to overthrow.

Protesters invited by high school students gathered around 19:00 (1700 GMT) in front of the old train station in Belgrade. Sixteen high school students walked in Savski Trg square, holding a white rose while reading the names of the victims.

Protests were made in some other towns such as Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Aleksinac.

“Corruption is the root of all the problems in our society. Elections can be the only solution for this situation,” 35 -year -old scientists who participated in the protest. He said.

The protests in Serbia, which was due to the death of 16 people last November, shook the Vucic and SNS party.

The protests were peaceful until 13 August, dozens of police officers and civilians were injured in conflicts.

Protesters accused corruption for the NOVİ SAD train station disaster and demand early elections in the hope of transferring Vucic and his party.

Students accused of opposition groups and anti -corruption observers, vucic and allies of organized crime, violence against political opponents and suppressing the allegations that they denied media freedoms.
