Tesco product recalled over allergy risk

Tesco is urging customers to return one of its popular house brand meals after discovering a risk for people with dairy allergies.

The supermarket chain has decided to recall ‘Tesco 6 Eggplant Katsu Bao Buns’ due to concerns that it may contain milk that is not stated on the product’s label.

The Food Standards Agency said this meant the product could pose a health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or dairy ingredients.

In the announcement made on the website, it was said: “If you purchased the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk, do not eat it.”

Customers are asked to return products with an expiration date code by December 13, inclusive. A full refund will be given upon return of the product and customers are not required to produce a receipt.

FCA said Tesco had issued a notice to its customers about the recall and had contacted relevant allergy support organisations, who would then notify customers of the recall.

The recall notice was issued on Monday and the product is now listed as ‘out of stock’ on the website.

The possible presence of milk “makes the product potentially unsafe for customers with intolerance or allergy to milk or milk ingredients”, the supermarket said in a letter to customers.

Tesco reportedly apologized for the inconvenience and confirmed that no other products were affected by this recall.

Late last month the supermarket was also forced to recall Tesco Celery, Fruit and Nut Salad due to a separate allergen risk, saying it may contain traces of mustard in the product’s mayonnaise that was not mentioned on the label.
